What is personal branding?

According to Wikipedia

Personal branding is the conscious and intentional effort to create and influence public perception of an individual by positioning them as an authority in their industry, elevating their credibility, and differentiating themselves from the competition, to ultimately advance their career, increase their circle of influence, and have a larger impact.”

We know branding from huge companies…soda, sneakers, cars.

Sometimes we only need to see a tiny part of their brand and can identify the product or the company.

That is what you are aiming for.

You want to be easily recognized, easily remembered and the first person people think of when they need your product or service.

Social media is a fantastic tool for establishing that image.

No matter if you are a small business owner, a startup, influencer or a nonprofit organization…Image is everything…and authenticity is key.

Give people the wrong impression, you will lose their trust and their business.

Now…how to get started?

For most of us it gets a little overwhelming when we have to talk about ourselves,

so, let’s break it down...let’s make a list of questions (I love lists):

Who are you?

I don’t mean “I am Joe Doe” Introduce yourself to the world…

For example:

-are you a veteran (veteran owned business or knowledge you gained during your service)

-female (woman owned business)

-native of (where are you from? Do you speak a foreign language? What brought you to where you are now?)

-lover of (coffee or tea...cats or dogs...anything that you would like to share with the world)

What are some of your favorite things?

My clients and followers know that I am lost without my morning coffee, that I collect coffee/tea mugs and that I am crazy about dogs…Snoopy is my hero and I am a sucker for British mystery shows…none of that has anything to do with my photography, but it gives them an idea about who I am.

So, basically things that makes you “you”.

People want to feel like they already know you a little before they meet you.

Other questions you should ask:

In your industry / market, what is it that makes you unique?

- Education

- Style

- Specialty

- Product

What is the story of your brand?

-How did you end up doing what you want to be known for

What are your goals?

-where do you be in a few months, a year, ten years?

Who would be your perfect client / customer?

- It is important to know who you will market yourself to.

- What is the age group?

- Will you market more toward women or men, or does it matter?

- What job would your ideal client have?

- Where is your perfect customer located?

Where will you market to your clientele?

-Social Media?

-Which social media platform will work best for you?


-Magazines, Newspaper?

You should also check out your competitors…there is nothing wrong with having a look at what others have done in their branding (as long as you don’t just go and copy it – remember authenticity is key)

After answering these questions, you are a huge step closer to knowing which way to take your brand.
